KOWARI
Two years after “Trail” and a 50-concert European tour, the Belgian band Kowari is back with a new album, “Memento.
This second album by Damien Chierici (violin, programming) and Louan Kempenaers (piano, programming) is a modern electronica ode to travel and letting go. Downtempo and mainly instrumental on “Trail,” Kowari’s universe is enriched here with epic backing vocals, hypnotic organic drums, intoxicating loops and stronger electro beats. “The Kowari DNA we imbibed on ‘Trail’ is still there,” Damien and Louan explain. The piano, the violin, the search for melodic power in the compositions, the drive of the loops, the calming moments that usher in more cinematic flights of fancy…. But there was also a desire to add organic warmth and to go even further in the use of electro elements.
“During a concert, people cry at some songs and dance at others. That’s exactly what we were looking for.
PIFFY
Piffy, Piffke to her friends, loves bats and thick rhythms. She writes songs for all the geeky introverts in the world, on themes such as body shaming, loud moaning and “me ni belle”. She takes every opportunity to incorporate the word “baby” into her lyrics, which is not at all unusual when you consider that this piffy rejects adulthood. Live, like her awkward dance moves, Piffy’s music bounces in all directions, occasionally pausing to take a sip of water or sing charming lyrics.
Piffy believes in the unique power of piffers. To her, a piffer is someone who feels and cares as much as she does. A piffer has the brain of a nerd and the wonder of a child, and the versatility to be both an expressive introvert and a goofy entertainer, with clumsy moves that go anywhere.
April 2024 saw the release of piffy’s debut EP, “piffiverse”. Piffiverse is a geeky planet, a world where ebb and flow set the mood and good and evil live in harmony. Piffy presented this EP at Trix, where she was artist-in-residence in 23-24. She has already opened for Tricky, Caroline Polachek, Hemlocke Springs, Whispering Sons and Bluai, among others.
